    Snowmelt Runoff Model in Japan

    The preliminary Japanese snowmelt runoff model was modified so that all the input variables arc of the antecedent days and the inflow of the previous day is taken into account. A few LANDSAT images obtained in the past were effectively used to verify and modify the depletion curve induced from the snow water equivalent distribution at maximum stage and the accumulated degree days at one representative point selected in the basin. Together with the depletion curve, the relationship between the basin ide daily snowmelt amount and the air temperature at the point above are exhibited homograph form for the convenience of the model user.     Abundances of lithium, sodium, and potassium in Vega

    Vega's photospheric abundances of Li, Na, and K were determined by using considerably weak lines measured on the very high-S/N spectrum, while the non-LTE correction and the gravity-darkening correction were adequately taken into account. It was confirmed that these alkali elements are mildly underabundant ([Li/H] ~ -0.6, [Na/H] ~ -0.3, and [K/H] ~ -0.2) compared to the solar system values, as generally seen also in other metals. Since the tendency of Li being more deficient than Na and K is qualitatively similar to what is seen in typical interstellar cloud, the process of interstellar gas accretion may be related with the abundance anomaly of Vega, as suspected in the case of lambda Boo stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 8 pages, 9 figure

    Chemical potential shift in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3): Photoemission test of the phase separation scenario

    We have studied the chemical potential shift in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) as a function of doped hole concentration by core-level x-ray photoemission. The shift is monotonous, which means that there is no electronic phase separation on a macroscopic scale, whereas it is consistent with the nano-meter scale cluster formation induced by chemical disorder. Comparison of the observed shift with the shift deduced from the electronic specific heat indicates that hole doping in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) is well described by the rigid-band picture. In particular no mass enhancement toward the metal-insulator boundary was implied by the chemical potential shift, consistent with the electronic specific heat data.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Europhysics Letter
